Acer Aspire 3000 Problems

The Acer Aspire 3000 laptop has Windows XP, a Mobile AMD processor, and 256 or 512 megabytes (MB) of system memory. These laptops can experience memory-related problems, issues with a variety of hardware devices and battery-related problems. Many can be corrected by removing software conflicts or by installing updated drivers or critical files.

  1. Memory Issues

    • Some Acer Aspire 3000 laptops have only 256 MB of system memory, a configuration that can result in lackluster performance, especially in support of certain Acer Empowering Technology software programs. Acer recommends uninstalling certain components of the Empowering Technology suite, including Norton Antivirus 2006, Acer ePerformance Management, Acer ePower Management, Acer ePresentation Management and Acer eSettings Management. Users should not remove Acer Empowering Framework or Acer eRecovery Management, Acer warns, because that would disable system recovery.

    Sound Problems

    • Users have experienced problems with voices on DVDs playing at much lower levels than other sounds. This problem occurs when using the Acer Arcade program and can be corrected by disabling "Voice Cancellation" in the "Sound Effect Manager."

Upon booting the Acer Aspire 3000, Windows may require that the sound card drivers be reinstalled repeatedly. To permanently correct this issue, the user should install the Realtek Audio Driver version A3.85 or a newer version of the Realtek driver.

    Video Problems

    • The Acer and Ferrari screen savers can conflict with other software and display a series of error message boxes on an Aspire 3000. The user must use the "Display" menu to alter the screen saver to a theme other than "Acer" or "Ferrari."

    Windows Update Errors

    • Acer Aspire 3000 laptops may show "Error number: 0x80244001" when attempting to download files via Windows Update. Acer has provided a file named "1690FIX.bat" that must be downloaded and installed to correct this problem.

Keyboard, Touch Pad and Battery Problems

    • Some Acer Aspire 3000 users have reported that the keyboard and touch pad behave erratically in normal Windows XP mode. The input devices work normally in Safe Mode. These users have stated that removing the battery and running the laptop on AC power corrects this issue.

If the keyboard works properly but the touch pad does not, users should press Function + F7 to turn on the touch pad.

The four-cell battery that ships with the Aspire 3000 only holds a 1.5-hour charge when new and idle, although Acer offers an eight-cell upgrade battery with a three-hour idle charge.
