The U.S. Navy has used storekeepers for many years. They are charged with maintaining the Navy's ship supplies and maintaining its military supply stores. They are also responsible for keeping logs and dealing with all the equipment used by Navy personnel. Their role largely goes unnoticed yet fills a vital function for the Navy.
A Navy storekeeper is responsible for receiving, storing and issuing equipment. Coordinating supplies and the use of materials and tools is another primary function. A naval storekeeper is also in charge of procuring supplies and checking incoming items against orders. More than this, his job includes filling requisitions for stock, taking inventories and maintaining records such as vouchers, invoices, stock cards, and requisition forms. The storekeeper should be proficient in the use of typical office machines.
Would-be storekeepers must meet a few minimum qualifications to receive training. Applicants are expected to write legibly and neatly while also being able to handle office equipment. Experience working as a sales associate or in bookkeeping is highly desirable.
Chain of Command
As with all jobs, storekeepers must answer to a boss. In this case, the boss would be the supply officer. Yet there are exceptions in certain locations where there is no supply officer; in this case, the storekeeper is given special training to operate without direct supervision.
A storekeeper's training lasts about 16 weeks and focuses on supply system organization ashore and afloat. He is also taught basic English skills in grammar, spelling and the use of word-processing programs.
