Alabama Cosmetology Teacher License Requirements
Becoming a cosmetologist can be the beginning of a rewarding career. Helping others by getting a license to teach cosmetology may take some work, but having your teaching license can open up lots of avenues. There are many jobs in the state of Alabama you can get with your teaching license. Vocational schools, cosmetology schools and manufacturers of beauty supplies all look for qualified professionals who can educate.

First Steps
-
Completing your course in cosmetology is the first step to becoming an instructor. The state of Alabama requires you to complete 1500 classroom hours or 3000 apprenticeship hours to be licensed as a cosmetologist or cosmetology instructor.
Approval For The Exam
-
Apply to take the instructors examination within two years of completing the required classroom or apprenticeship training. You must be approved by the cosmetology board to take the instructors examination. After you have been approved, you must contact Professional Credentials Services (PCS) at 888-822-3272. PCS is a private company contracted by the state of Alabama to administer examination services

Take Your Exam
-
After contacting PCS, you will receive an admission notice for the test. The admission notice will take between seven and ten business days to reach you. You can visit the PCS's website (see Resources) for a schedule of test dates and deadlines. You will need to bring current photo ID, your admission notice and a recent photo to the test site. Be on time and be sure to follow all of the PCS's security rules for the examination room.
The Test
-
The test you need to take is a national test called the National Instructor Practical Examination. You will need a mannequin head and mannequin hands. Apply a set of artificial nails to the hand before reporting for your test. The instructor examination consists of four parts.
Examination Parts
-
You will have to prepare a theory lesson plan and set up the classroom. You will be evaluated on course title, assigned topics and specific assignments given. You will be asked to give a theory lecture, demonstration lecture plan and a demonstration lecture.
After the Test
-
The examination takes more than one hour, so prepare yourself. You will be expected to summarize and clean up your work space and this will be part of your grade. To pass the test, you must achieve an overall score of 80. If you pass the test, you will be notified by the state, and your fees must be sent along with the notification document back to the state of Alabama.
Tips
-
Call ahead in bad weather. No cell phones or other electronic devices are permitted in the exam room.
