Grounds Maintenance Job Description


Grounds maintenance workers carry out all duties required to create and maintain an aesthetically pleasing horticultural environment. This may include planting, trimming, administering pesticides and any other function related to the design and upkeep of external and internal landscaping. Grounds maintenance professionals are employed by both commercial and private clients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Following the instruction of landscape designers, grounds maintenance professionals install plants and other objects (e.g. rock, cement, lighting, furniture, water, etc.) in both internal and external environments. Once installed, these professional maintains these areas through irrigation, trimming, pruning, raking, mulching and other methods. If necessary, pesticide is administered to eliminate the presence of vermin.

Training and Education

  • There are no formal education requirements to become a grounds maintenance worker. In fact, a high school diploma is not even mandatory. Employees typically acquire their training wile on the job. Those seeking to grow within the field may choose to obtain a four-year degree in horticulture, landscape design or a related field of study. Additionally, most states require individuals to obtain a license in order to work with and administer pesticides. The operation of a motor vehicle is often required in this line of work. As such, employers seek candidates with a valid driver's license.

Average Compensation & Industry Outlook

  • reported that as of Oct. 26, 2009, the average grounds maintenance worker in the United States of America earned a yearly income of $36,000. Additionally, employment within this industry is expected by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics to increase at a rate of 18 percent from 2006 through 2016. This is anticipated as a result of increasing demand caused by a boom in construction.

The Professional Grounds Management Society

  • The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) is an industry association founded in 1911with the goal of education and providing career advancement opportunities to its members. In addition to events and learning resources, the PGMS offers voluntary certification to those in the field, both as a Certified Grounds Technician (CGT) and a Certified Grounds Manager (CGM).

The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET)

  • The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) is an international professional trade organization comprised of "lawn care professionals, landscape management contractors, design/build/installation professionals, and interior plantscapers." Based in Herndon, Va., this group offers voluntary certification within six areas of specialty: landscape, interior landscape, exterior landscape, ornamental landscape, turfgrass and turfgrass/cool season lawns. PLANET maintains that certification provides potential customers the ability "to identify persons with acceptable knowledge of principles and practices of the profession."
