Microsoft Outlook is a popular email program on Windows XP. Bundled with the Office Suite, there are several versions of Outlook, including 2002, 2003 and 2007. Problems with Outlook on Windows XP may include incomplete installations, activation errors, error messages when starting the program, error messages when sending or receiving email, and address book error messages.

  2. Installation Issues

  3. When installing Outlook 2007 in Windows XP, the program may hang. A progress box will appear on the screen, but the box will not show any further activity. In this case, active anti-virus software creates a conflict with the installation program. The user should disable the anti-virus software and stop any associated services from running while Outlook installs.
  4. Activation Problems

  5. After installing Outlook in Windows XP, Microsoft requires that the product be activated via an Internet connection or a telephone. The program may report a variety of failed activation errors, including "Invalid Product Key," a notice that the user has met activation limits or a "Your Installation Cannot Be Activated" message. These problems can be caused when the user modifies the computer's hardware, exceeds the number of activations permitted for the program, or when the Opa11.dat file or the Data.dat file has been corrupted.
  6. Error Messages When Starting Outlook

  7. In Windows XP, Outlook may give error messages when starting the program. Outlook may report that it is "unable to open the Outlook window," that either the program does not have a profile associated with it or that profiles cannot be loaded because of an unexpected error. These error messages can be corrected by altering the Windows compatibility settings to allow Outlook to run natively in Windows XP. A registry error may also cause these startup problems.
  8. Error Messages When Sending or Receiving Mail in Outlook

  9. Time-outs and server error messages when trying to send or receive email may reveal a short-term problem caused by overloaded Internet traffic or a network issue. These error messages, however, may also point to problems with a corrupt profile, a damaged installation of Outlook, the presence of a virus, or altered firewall settings. In the case of a slow Internet connection or network, Windows XP users can extend the server time-out setting.
  10. Address Book Errors

  11. Microsoft Outlook may issue an error message when a user tries to send a new mail to a contact listed in the address book. Windows XP users must reinstall the address book component in order to correct this behavior.

Outlook 2002 may not display an address book after the user upgrades Outlook from an earlier version. The upgrade process corrupts the address book. To correct this problem, the user must remove the address book, then re-add it.
