Detox Centers in Oklahoma

Drugs and alcohol can dictate the lives of those that abuse them, but addicted Oklahomans can find treatment to rid their bodies of harmful substances and help them take back their lives sober and drug-free. According to the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, approximately 150 drug and alcohol treatment centers were operating in Oklahoma as of October 2009. Several treatment centers around the state offer medically supervised detoxification as well as specialized substance abuse therapeutic programs.

  1. Types of Care

    • As addiction recovery can mean something different to each patient, there are several levels of substance abuse treatments available in Oklahoma. Outpatient programs provide therapeutic services and light medical assistance to recovering addicts. For intense long-term care, treatment centers such as Roadback in Lawton offer residential programs designed to provide a supportive environment to help overcome addiction and foster recovery.

    Methadone Detoxification

    • Methadone is a replacement therapy often used to treat heroin addiction. Like morphine, methadone masks pain while reducing withdrawal symptoms. Several Oklahoma treatment centers use methadone in their detoxification programs because of its effectiveness and relatively low cost. Tulsa Rightway Medical offers a methadone-only detoxification program. In Oklahoma City, the detoxification program at Veterans Affairs Medical Center treats addiction withdrawal exclusively with methadone and buprenorphine. Though most methadone-focused detoxification programs are located in Oklahoma's bigger cities, Quapaw Counseling Services in Miami and Oklahoma Treatment Services in Roland offer methadone-based detox as well as methadone maintenance.

    Programs for Adolescents

    • Teens with substance abuse problems can find detoxification and treatment programs geared toward providing adolescents with the stability they need to recover. Co-specializing in mental health, Parkside Psychiatric Hospital and Clinic in Tulsa offers a highly structured, multidisciplinary treatment program for patients ages 10 to 17. Oaks Behavioral Health Center in McAlester provides long-term residential programs geared toward teens as well as adults. In Guthrie, the Four Winds Ranch treats chemically dependent girls ages 14 to 18 with an intense residential program.

    Programs for Women

    • Several treatment centers around the state offer programs specifically geared toward chemically dependent women. Some even provide assistance to the families of recovering addicts. Cushing Valley Hope has a comprehensive family-therapy program. Monarch, Inc., a Muskogee-based substance abuse treatment program for women, accommodates patients' children during their stay in the center.

    Costs and Payment

    • The cost of treatment depends on several factors, including whether the institution is publicly or privately funded, the length of stay and the intensity of care. Some facilities accept insurance, including Medicare, Medicaid, military and private insurance. For those without insurance, some Oklahoma treatment centers offer payment assistance plans, such as a sliding scale fee determined by income and other factors. Access to Recovery, a federal grant program, provides vouchers to those seeking treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. To be eligible for this voucher, program participants must be living at least 200 percent below the poverty level and involved in or at high risk of being involved in the criminal justice system.
