The Lemon Cleanse diet, also known as the Maple Syrup diet or Master Cleanse, is a diet program that is supposed to help people lose weight and remove toxins from the body. Stanley Burroughs designed the Lemon Cleanse Diet in 1941, and the 2004 book "Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days" by Peter Glickman popularized the diet regimen. The book advocates the Lemon Cleanse diet as a weight-loss program.

  2. Recipe

  3. On the Lemon Cleanse diet, you drink a special recipe 12 times a day. It contains freshly squeezed organic lime or lemon juice, grade B maple syrup, ground pepper and water. You drink this through a straw. In addition to drinking this "lemonade," you also drink a laxative tea and do saltwater flushes once a day. The diet can last anywhere from 10 to 40 days.
  4. Side Effects

  5. Dizziness and weakness are common side effects of the Lemon Cleanse diet. Some joint pain is also common. You may experience vomiting as well. Many people also experience problems with their bowel movements; most frequently constipation is an issue. After finishing the diet, it may be difficult or painful to consume food.
  6. Effectiveness

  7. Proponents of the diet claim that it can help users lose weight and increase their energy levels. Some people also believe that it has helped them handle various chronic diseases. Others say that it has helped them increase their sexual stamina. The only proven claim is that it does help users to lose weight. However, once they end the diet, users often regain the weight they lost while on the regimen.
  8. Endorsements

  9. Many celebrities have used and advocate the Lemon Cleanse diet for losing weight quickly. Singer and actress Beyonce used it to lose weight for a role in a movie, but she advised others against using it. Actor Jared Leto reportedly used the diet to lose weight after he had gained it for a movie role. Robin Quivers, one of Howard Stern's radio show co-hosts, also used the Lemon Cleanse diet and reportedly lost a significant amount of weight.
  10. Dangers

  11. Many health professionals believe that this diet may be harmful to the body. The main concern is that you will not get enough nutrients or calories. While on the diet, your body may be lacking in protein as well as many essential vitamins and nutrients. This could cause permanent damage. Also, if you flush your body out with saltwater as is recommended, it may clear out both bad and good bacteria.
