LSI was founded as LSI Logic in Milpitas, California, in 1981. By 1986, the firm had developed a standard product line of 32-bit and 16-bit computer processors, the type of which would become commonplace in products and systems developed during the global personal computing boom in the late 20th century.

Partnership with Sony

In 1994, LSI partnered with the Sony Computer Entertainment to create a microchip and software program for the PlayStation video game system. Five years later, the two firms joined forces again to create a specialized processor for the second generation PlayStation.
