Genital hyperpigmentation happens when a person's skin has changed in color. This change is not caused by regular exposure to the sun. The cause of hyperpigmentation is the excess production of melanin.
Hyperpigmentation is caused by the excessive production of melanin. Melanin is a pigment that creates skin color and tone. Hyperpigmentation happens when there is an excessive secretion of melanocyte. Melanocyte is a hormone that is responsible for the production of melanocytes. Hyperpigmentation tends to affect areas that are not regularly exposed to the sun or light, such as the genitals and armpits.
Hyperpigmentation can be caused by internal and external forces. The external causes are exposure to the sun. This causes a tan tone when suntan lotion isn't used. The internal causes include unequal hormone levels, such as during pregnancy.
Depending on the cause, there are multiple types of hyperpigmentation. The first type is melasma, freckles, age and liver spots. Another type is Addison's disease and other types of adrenal insufficiency. With Addison's disease, hormones induce melanin sythesis.
Treatment options for genital hyperpigmentation include hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a topical agent for reducing skin pigmentation. Another option is laser resurfacing, which involves lasers evaporating the first few layers of damaged skin.
If you believe you have genital, or any type of hyperpigmentation, seek medical advice immediately. Hyperpigmentation can be treated early and easily if medical advice is sought at first the sign of symptoms.
