Coronaviruses can cause respiratory, intestinal and neurological illness. There are hundreds of coronaviruses; they include human, canine, feline, porcine, bat, equine, bovine, murine, bubul and thrush coronaviruses. Human coronaviruses cause about 33 percent of cases of the "common cold." Known human coronaviruses include human coronavirus, human enteric coronavirus and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus.

  1. Human Coronavirus

    • Human coronavirus can cause runny nose, general feeling of illness, mild sore throat, cough, headache, low fever and chills; symptoms are similar to those seen for rhinovirus. Symptom can last for a week, but there is variation between persons and some persons are asymptomatic while infected.

    Encephalitis

    • In rare cases, human coronavirus can cause encephalitis, inflammation of the brain. Symptoms of encephalitis include headache, irritability, fatigue, fever, joint pain, confusion, hallucinations, personality changes, double vision, seizures, muscle weakness, loss of sensation, paralysis, tremors, rash, unconsciousness and bulging in the soft spots of the skull (only seen in infants).

    Human Enteric Coronavirus

    • Enteric coronavirus can cause inflammation of the mucous membrane of the intestines and stomach, diarrhea and dehydration. It may cause necrotizing entercolitis in infants, who may present with distended abdomen, green/yellow vomiting, blood in the stools, inability to tolerate feeding, lethargy, unstable temperature, low heart rate and difficulty breathing

    SARS Coronavirus

    • SARS coronavirus can cause a high fever (greater than 38 deg C [100 deg F]); chills; headache; general feeling of illness; body aches; diarrhea (only in 10 to 20 percent of patients); shortness of breath and dry, nonproductive cough.

    Pneumonia

    • Most people who are infected with SARS coronavirus develop viral pneumonia (irritation and swelling of the lungs). Symptoms of viral pneumonia can include chills, clammy skin, cough, tiredness, fever, headache, joint stiffness, muscle stiffness, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, shortness of breath and sweating.
