What Schooling Is Needed to Become an Engineer?

Engineering is a broad category of specialties which uses math and science to produce products or services that meet needs. The basic purpose of engineering is to solve problems. This could be designing bridges, a computer system, mass transit systems and medical equipment, or figuring out the best method to clean up toxic waste. Engineers use their knowledge of the laws of nature to create and execute plans for solving society's problems. Becoming an engineer requires a college degree.

  1. College

    • You must go to college and graduate from an accredited engineering school to become an engineer. Coursework varies from college to college, but students are taught how to apply the laws of nature to problems in the real world. Most programs include classes in engineering, physics, calculus, chemistry and computer programming. Some programs also include studies in problem solving, ethical standards and communication.

    Advanced Degree

    • Going beyond a four-year college degree is typical for many engineers. A master's degree will allow students to increase their knowledge and specialize in a particular field of engineering. A Ph.D. program is the route generally taken by engineers who plan to enter research and education. A master's degree will take another two years of full-time college study, and a Ph.D. program will take five to seven years to complete.

    Helpful Abilities

    • Successful engineers tend to have certain qualities or abilities in common. They are detail-oriented, analytical, imaginative and do well in math and science. Other qualities which may be helpful to engineers include creativity, good communication skills and finding enjoyment in building things or improving how things work.

    Types

    • There are many types of engineers. One of the most common engineering fields is chemical. Chemical engineers work to discover organic and inorganic chemicals, discover uses for them and methods of using them in manufacturing. Industrial, electrical, civil and mechanical are also common fields of engineering. One of the less common types of engineering is environmental. Environmental engineers work with the quality of land, water and air to solve pollution-related problems. Other less common fields of engineering include nuclear, structural, mining and aerospace.

    Licenses & Salary

    • Licenses are required for engineers. Licensed engineers are known as professional engineers. To get a license, engineers must graduate from an accredited college, pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, get four years of engineering work experience and pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam (PE). Salaries for engineers vary according to work experience, job type and job location, but engineers can expect to earn a five- to six-figure salary.
