Advanced Golf Technology Fairway Driver Reviews

The fairway driver is one of the newest types of golf clubs. Its design allows use off the tee as a driver and off the grass as a 3-wood. Advanced Golf Technology is the first company to manufacture this new type of metal club using high-tech metals derived from the military. The club is for experienced players who seek greater distance and control off the tee and from long shots to the green.

  1. History

    • Advanced Golf Technology (AGT) of Irvine, Calif., is a manufacturer of high-tech fairway metals and drivers. Steve Solo--founder of AGT and a graduate from UC Irvine in mathematics and physics--originally worked with exotic metals while in the military. Through his exposure to golf sprang the idea of developing an advanced metal wood. Using an imaginative design, he created what is now known as the SuperNova Fairway Woods and Aurora Drivers.

    Specifications

    • The SuperNova II Fairway Driver uses 100 percent American-made metals forged in Reading, Penn. The primary metal is Aermet, a super-strong, lightweight steel alloy used in strategic areas in jet fighters, nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. Through unique application and design, AGT has produced clubs that are very hot off the face and have performance characteristics not seen in other metal clubs.
      Head size: 240cc
      Loft: 17 degrees
      Face: Aermet
Shaft: Various-43-inch AJ Tech, Penley and Apache; others custom fit.
Color: Pinot Red, including black leather head cover

    Benefits

    • It has a higher launch angle than a 3-wood, carries farther like a driver, yet the ball lands softly on target like an iron. It is particularly good for players looking to increase distance on long fairway shots and accuracy off the tee.

    Reviews

    • The SuperNova Fairway Driver has been extensively reviewed in the golfing press. The original edition earned a 5-star rating from Golf Magazine when it appeared in 2004.

Golfers who have tried AGT's Fairway Driver report the following reactions:

"This club is extremely easy to hit off fairways and even out of rough."

"This club had me hitting the ball straighter then I have EVER done ... 250 yards as straight as an arrow. Terrific!"

"Seniors and ladies will appreciate the high launch and easy to control small head size."

"This is an awesome club!!! It seems to fly as far as my current 9.5 degree Driver."

"When I hit it off the grass, the ball hung in the air and landed softly, with hardly any roll. I shot a 71 and hit the Fairway Driver absolutely straight, shot after shot."

    Considerations

    • The deep face makes it a bit more difficult to hit from the fairway than a 3-wood, but it's a great alternative to a driver off the tee.

It's priced in the high-end range for the serious golfer.

The complete line of Advanced Golf Technology's golf clubs is designed to meet all USGA ratings and tolerances.

    Purchase

    • The SuperNova Fairway Wood is available from Advanced Golf Technology through their website or at selected golf retailers. Prices range from $225 to $339, depending on shaft. It is fully warranted for one year against factory defects.
