Types of Hair
-
Hair-weaving treatments are done with two types of hair: synthetic hair and human hair. Human hair used for weaving typically comes from China and India. This hair is very versatile and can be washed, curled and colored, just like your natural hair. The quality of human hair makes it more expensive than synthetic hair. Synthetic hair is a man-made fiber. This type of hair is created to resemble natural hair, however, it's not as versatile. Most synthetic fibers shouldn't be washed or treated with heating appliances. Synthetic hair, like human hair, is available in many different lengths, colors and qualities.

Bonding-Weave Treatment
-
Bonding is one of the cheapest, simplest and least time-consuming hair-weaving treatments. Tracks of weave are attached to the roots of your natural hair using a liquid, glue adhesive. The bonding treatment doesn't last as long as other weaving methods and can cause hair damage if the bonding glue isn't properly attached to the roots.
Sew-In-Weave Treatment
-
Natural hair is braided into cornrows, and tracks of weave are sewn into the cornrows with heavy weaving thread. This weaving treatment is usually done with human hair and lasts about six weeks.
Fusion-Weave Treatment
-
Fusion weaving is the most versatile and realistic weave treatment. It's also the most costly and time-consuming. This method typically takes about 10-to-15 hours to complete and costs as much as $2,000. Individual strands of human hair are meticulously attached to tiny sections of natural hair using a hot wax. The fusion-weave treatment lasts up to three months.
Warning
-
Taking care of your natural hair while wearing a hair weave is extremely important. Make sure to keep your hair and scalp clean and moisturized. If you decide to get a hair-weaving treatment that requires your hair to be cornrowed, keep in mind that traction alopecia can develop when weaves are repeatedly attached to cornrows for an extended period of time. "One of the most common causes of hair loss among Black women is traction alopecia, hair loss due to pulling on the hair, as when it's braided tightly," says Dr. Basil M. Hantash, instructor of dermatology and plastic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
