Tony Little Gazelle Edge Vs. Treadmill

Everyone is looking for a fitness machine that helps burn the most calories, reduce the body fat percentage and take off inches, in the shortest period of time. There are many pros and cons to a treadmill or the Tony Little Gazelle Edge, but both can be effective exercise machines.

  1. Features of Treadmills

    • Treadmills allow you to get a top-notch cardiovascular workout without leaving your house. This is a convenience that keeps you out of bad weather and safe from predators in the dark. Treadmills are efficient ways to lose body fat and maintain a strong heart and lungs. One of the other lesser known benefits is that a treadmill is a lower impact workout compared to running on asphalt or concrete.

Features of Tony Little's Gazelle Edge

    • The Gazelle Edge was designed by fitness guru Tony Little, who was looking to get the same type of cardiovascular workout as a treadmill with even less impact on the body. The motion you go through on a Gazelle is like being suspended when running. It is considered an elliptical training machine that provides excellent cardiovascular training.

On the machine, you hold arm handles that keep your hands near shoulder level. As your feet glide along alternately, your hands do the same, almost in a running pattern. This does reduce stress on the knees, back and hips.

    Calories

    • The Calorie Calculator on SparkPeople.com suggests you will burn more calories on a Gazelle than a treadmill, in the same amount of time. Assume your weight is 150 pounds and you will workout for 30 minutes: the Gazelle with resistance burns 264 calories while the treadmill burns 106, according to SparkPeople.

This, however, is based on a flat 20-minute mile. A treadmill set at a 15 percent incline at a 9 minute mile pace jumps the calories burned all the way up to 642. As you can see, there is a lot more flexibility with the treadmill.

    Flexibility

    • The treadmill gives you the opportunity to do interval training which is one of the most effective ways to burn fat. This means adding inclines or picking up the pace for a period to max yourself out and then slowing your pace for a period of recovery before maxing out once again. The Gazelle Edge doesn't really allow you to manipulate your pace and resistance to accomplish this.

    Cost

    • As of 2009, the Gazelle costs around $100 and requires about the same space as a treadmill. Treadmills range from $200 to $2000. With a treadmill you may want to spend a little extra money in order to take advantage of the different programs to run on: mountains, steady incline, and paced runs.
