Promeris Side Effects
Promeris is a topical medication used to prevent as well as treat flea and tick infestations in dogs. It is comprised of two drugs, metaflumizone and amitraz. While Promeris has been shown to be effective, the side effects have been widely reported, and as a result Promeris has become less popular among pet owners and veterinarians alike. Dosing

Promeris is a liquid, and is available in pre-packaged plastic applicator tubes. The bodyweight of the dog will determine the size of dose given. The liquid is applied between the shoulder blades of the dog, but not too far down the back to ensure the dog cannot lick it off.
Duration of Treatment

Promeris is given once a month, preferably on or about the same date at the beginning of the month. It will normally last more than four weeks, so if a dose is accidentally given late, there should be no problems.

Common Side Effects

Some common side effects of Promeris include lethargy, drooling, loss of appetite and loss of coordination.
More Serious Side Effects

Although much rarer, there have been reports of more serious side effects from Promeris. These include lowered heart rate, vomiting and difficulty breathing.
Side Effects on Cats

Promeris (for dogs) contains the drug amitraz, which can be toxic to cats. A cat ingesting or coming into contact with Promeris may become lethargic, disoriented, begin vomiting and could die if it does not receive treatment. For these reasons, Promeris should be applied outside to any dog that also lives with cats. This is so that the liquid is absorbed and not shaken off after application inside the house where the cat may come into contact with it.
Side Effects on Humans

Promeris emits a particularly strong odor when applied, and many people find it offensive. Headaches may result from prolonged exposure. Rubber gloves should be worn to prevent exposure and contact with skin. Any person taking MAOI anti-depressant medications should avoid any contact with Promeris, as it can be absorbed through the skin and the danger of negative drug interactions can occur.
