What Makes a Good Trade School Teacher?

Teaching trade school is a wonderful way to help others learn a skill you are passionate about. Imparting your special knowledge can enrich your lilfe as well as those of others. There are several personal traits or characteristics that help to make a person a good trade school teacher.

  1. Interest

    • A good trade school teacher must obviously have an authentic interest in the trade they are teaching. There must be a genuine fascination with the subject that has lasted years and keeps your interest in new and upcoming trends in the field. Having an interest keeps your take on the subject exciting and lets students know there are fun facts and findings yet to be discovered.

    Communication

    • Strong communication skills are a must for any good trade school teacher. Communication with the students and school administrators is all required day after day. Being able to teach in a way students can relate and respond to is imperative. Good communication skills are essential to being able to recognize the individual needs of students.

    Leadership

    • Leading an entire classroom of students of varying ages through daily activities is a daunting experience. A good trade school teacher is able to keep command of the students in class which can be hard with varying age groups. Some students may have high energy levels where others may need coaxing to participate in class. Being able to lead a class successfully means being able to integrate and deal with all types of personalities present in the classroom. This also includes conflict resolution skills and the ability to convey confidence and authority.

    Creativity

    • It is really important that a trade school teacher have lots of creativity to keep students interested in their lessons. Class work has must be engaging and interesting for students to retain the information and stay interested in learning more. This requires being imaginative, energetic and resourceful. Just as it is important for a good trade school teacher to be creative it is just as important to be able recognize and inspire creativity in students.

    Organization

    • Besides having a whole classroom full of questioning and curious students to keep organized, a trade school teacher must also keep track of multiple records for each student. Attendance records, grades for each class, each test and each project must be kept up to date and accurate. This requires a great deal of personal organizational skills. Disorganization can lead to total chaos in the classroom and eventually loss of communication with students and school administrators.
