Printing Problems With Adobe Reader 8

Adobe Reader 8 is a powerful tool for displaying various PDF documents. Not only can users view normal letter-sized documents in Adobe Reader 8, but they can also view complex, multi-layer files of varying size. The PDF document format ensures that the image on the page remains the same, despite the host computer viewing the file. Problems occur, however, when attempting to print those various files.

  1. History

    • Adobe began in 1982, founded by former Xerox employees Charles Geschke and John Warnock. Soon, Geschke and Warnock had made major headway into the computing world, developing a language for printers to print images the way they appeared on the digital screen. However, this was just the beginning for Adobe: within 10 years, Adobe was producing products such as Acrobat, Photoshop and Illustrator and selling them to major computing giants Apple and Microsoft. Today, Adobe's impact is felt in every aspect of computer graphic technology, and millions use its Reader 8 on a daily basis.

    Printers

    • Some printing errors occur as a result of the printer itself. First, confirm that the printer is functional. Open another application and print off a sample page; if this fails, the printer might be to blame. If there is a screen on the printer, follow the instructions to solve the issue.

    Computer

    • Other problems occur as a result of an overloaded computer. Restart your computer, and try to print again. If this does not work, turn the printer off for at least 15 seconds to clear its memory. If printing problems persist, try printing your PDF from another computer; if this works, run a troubleshooting application for your printer, likely available on the printer manufacturer's website.

    PDF

    • Occasionally, a PDF can get distorted and malfunction when printing. Save the PDF under a different name; this causes Adobe Reader 8 to rewrite the file and allows for a fresh construction of the image. If it still will not print, choose "File," "Print" and "Advanced." Select "Print As Image" to print the document as an image; this could repair any problems occurring. For some PDF files, there is simply no way to reconstruct a corrupt document except by downloading the file again. If you got it from the Internet, download the file again and open up that file to print.

    PostScript Printers

    • Many printers have PostScript capabilities, and some problems occur when those capabilities are not turned on. Check your printer manual for instructions on enabling PostScript printing; once you enable it, print again. Another problem could center on the PostScript printer's available memory. Check the manual for instructions on how to find out how much memory is available; a printer should have 2MB of memory available to print at 300 dpi.
