Relational Database Uses

Relational databases have myriad uses, from storing personal or customer information to running a full-fledged e-commerce site. Programs such as Microsoft Access, SQL and MySQL are considered relational database software. Information is stored in tables, rows and columns to make it easier to find specific information. Microsoft Access has several ready-to-use relational databases, and others can be downloaded from the Office website.

  1. Home Inventory Database

    • Take inventory of your home
      Take inventory of your home

Create a database to keep track of all your home assets -- everything from computer equipment to jewelry to music. Enter your information using the forms provided to get started quickly. Run reports once you have all your assets entered, and print those reports. Make a backup copy of your database file. If you suffer fire damage or theft, you will have a record to submit to your insurance company.

    Events Database

    • Make an event tracking database for your church or organization. Build on the categories that are already there and add tables to track event volunteers. If you have already worked with other Office applications, Access is simple to learn. Most community colleges teach classes on using Access.

    Nutrition and Fitness Tracking

    • Track exercise and eating
      Track exercise and eating

Keep track of your workouts and eating habits with a database. Enter details of your daily meals and any exercise you do during the day, and let the database track your progress.

    Student Information

    • Track your students
      Track your students

Track student attendance, medical and general contact information. Print out attendance records and contact lists, keep track of student allergies and other special concerns, and send email to students right from your database.

    Online Volunteer Tracking

    • Track and schedule volunteers online with a relational database by using MSSQL or MySQL. The databases described above use Microsoft Access to store information on your computer. Microsoft SQL and MySQL let you gather information at a website and store that information online. Get started by looking for a website host that offers MySQL or SQL database storage.
