The Effects of Magnetic Therapy

Magnets are good for more than just hanging your kid's report card on the refrigerator. Magnets are the key components to magnetic therapy, a pain management technique that uses magnets to reduce pain. Magnetic therapy can be administered by a professional therapist or by utilizing magnetic products designed for therapeutic purposes. Magnetic therapy provides pain relief without any side effects.

  1. History

    • Magnetic therapy has been used for centuries. In Ancient Greece lodestone was used to perform magnetic therapy. Magnetic therapy has been practiced in China for more than 4,000 years. As centuries passed and technology evolved, so did magnetic therapy. Heavy magnets have been traded in for a variety of sleek magnetic products; some of which you can wear as you go about your day. Currently over 150 million people globally use magnetic therapy.

    The Process

    • The effects magnets have on blood circulation is what makes magnetic therapy effective for pain relief. Magnets cause blood vessels to expand, allowing for blood to flow freer. The improved circulation reduces pain. In addition to pain relief, magnetic therapy has cosmetic uses. Magnets flush toxins out of the body. Toxins cause wrinkles. The less toxins in your body equates to the less wrinkles you have.

    Types

    • Professional therapists administer magnetic therapy but the use of magnetic therapy products is the more common method of magnetic therapy. Magnetic products are preferred because the products are cheaper and more convenient than scheduling sessions with a professional therapist. Magnetic products come in many shapes and forms, such as shoe insoles, body wraps, bed mattresses and face masks (for beauty purposes).

    Warnings

    • While there are no side effects to magnetic therapy when administered properly, there are risks for certain people. According to Therion, a manufacture of magnetic therapy devices, women should not use magnetic therapy during the first trimester of pregnancy. Reviyve, another manufacture of magnetic therapy products, tells pregnant women to consult a doctor before using magnetic therapy devices.

Reviyve also advises people with electromagnetic devices, like defibrillators and pacemakers, to keep magnetic therapy products at least 18 inches away from electromagnetic devices at all times. Meanwhile, Therion states people with electromagnetic devices should not use magnetic therapy products at all. If you have an electromagnetic device ask your doctor if magnetic therapy would be appropriate for you.

    Benefits

    • Magnetic therapy treats pain without creating any ill side effects. Magnetic therapy is also known to provide quicker pain relief than traditional over the counter pain medication because the magnets can be directly applied to the problem area. For the age-conscious, magnetic therapy can reduce wrinkles, creating a more youthful appearance.
