Permanent hair removal - It is important to differentiate between permanent hair removal and permanent hair reduction as each has their own set of side effects. The only true method of permanent hair removal for most people is electrolysis. Laser hair removal and flashlamp are actually permanent hair reduction methods.
- The majority of side effects of permanent hair removal are temporary. These include pain, swelling, redness, blistering and hyperpigmentation at the removal sight during and after the procedure. These side effects can be treated with local anesthetics or topical treatments as directed by your clinic.
- With the benefits of permanent hair removal comes the risk of permanent side effects. Consider these effects carefully before undergoing any procedure. Skin discoloration, scarring and burns are all possible permanent side effects, and you should take the risk of these under serious advisement.
- Since all patients are different, not all side effects can be prevented. However, there are some things you can do to limit your risk. First, make sure your electrologist is licensed and certified. Make sure you receive a consultation and in it ask how long the provider has been in business, how many clients they have and if you can contact some references. Make sure the provider uses needle electrolysis, not electronic tweezers or photoepilators. Discuss any and all medical conditions with your provider, including hormonal issues.
- Some hair removal clinics advertise transdermal electrolysis as a permanent hair removal solution. Do not confuse this method with needle electrolysis, which is the only proven effective method of permanent hair removal. There is no published clinical data proving that transdermal electrolysis is effective or permanent.
