Being tied down to a desktop computer is not only an inconvenience; in some cases it's an impossibility. Many people need to access the internet, their email, and other data from their laptop, cell phone or other mobile device. This is made possible by a remote access server, and there are different types to choose from.
A remote access server is a server that provides access to the Internet. The server becomes the Internet host for gadgets connected to it.
The main types of remote access are dial-up, broadband and wireless. A dial-up connection requires a phone line to access the internet. Broadband service, facilitated by a cable or DSL modem, can be obtained through a monthly subscription plan, such as from a cable provider. Wireless also generally comes with a subscription plan, and this is the most common method for BlackBerrys and other smartphones.
The biggest difference between the types of remote access is their speed. With different servers and providers, the speed of getting to the internet and downloading data in a major consideration. Dial-up is the slowest of the three. Generally, the higher the speed, the more expensive the connection.
Another point to consider is security. With so much personal information to be shared and stored online, users must protect themselves. When deciding on a type of remote access server, find out if there is secure authentication, if there are secure connections, if file transfers are possible, and at what level of access can third parties take part.
When choosing remote access, a key factor is the type of work you will be using the connection for. The more vital Internet access is, the more you should be willing to pay.
