Writer
-
Write for traditional or new media. As a freelance writer, you may write content for magazines, newspapers or websites. You could also write content for blogs or other social media (including Facebook and Twitter). Some companies hire writers for a permanent position, while others hire them on a per-project basis. Freelance writing jobs are available through sites such as eWritingJobs and Elance. A degree is not required to become a writer, but post-secondary education in English will increase your credibility.

Desktop Publisher
-
Design items for print. As a desktop publisher, you might layout newsletters, advertisements or brochures. Desktop publishers use software to design a variety of business collateral. Desktop publishing jobs are available through sites such as Guru.com and Elance. Although a degree isn't required to become a desktop publisher, knowledge of design principles and software are necessary. An associate of graphic design degree offers the basic skills and knowledge necessary to be a desktop publisher.
Crafter
-
Sell your crafts. If you have an established product or can develop one, consider selling your crafts online. Several websites (including Ebay and Etsy) offer large, established venues for advertising your craft products. No formal education is necessary to become a crafter. However, knowledge of the marketplace (including your target audience's wants and needs) will help you sell more effectively.
Tutor
-
Tutor students in a subject you know. Tutoring websites (including Tutor.com and TutorVista) connect tutors with students. Tutors offer homework help online during scheduled hours. Most tutoring businesses require at least a bachelor's degree in the subject you will tutor. As part of the application process, you may be required to take knowledge tests and pass a background check.
Digital Scrapbook Artist
-
Design digital scrapbook materials. As a digital scrapbook artist, you might design scrapbook page elements, kits or templates. You could also create scrapbooks for clients using their photos. Digital scrapbook sites, including Two Peas in a Bucket and Scrap Girls, offer artists places to sell their art wares after an approval process. Scrapbook creators usually have their own personal website to sell their services. A formal education isn't required to be a digital scrapbook artist, but knowledge of imaging and design software, along with an artistic eye, will help you succeed.
Medical Transcriptionist
-
Transcribe medical notes. A medical transcriptionist converts audio files into text. Using audio recognition software, you type notes recorded by doctors and other medical personnel. Medical transcriptionists work from home through a transcription service company (including Medquist and Spheris). You will need a medical transcription certificate from an accredited program (available online) to become a medical transcriptionist.
Virtual Assistant
-
Provide small business office support. Virtual assistants perform the same tasks as traditional administrative assistance but in a virtual office environment. As a virtual assistant, you might type a letter of agreement, coordinate travel plans or send out invoices. Many virtual assistants work for clients close to their home office. However, several websites (such as VirtualAssistants and Virtual Office Temps) offer access to permanent, full-time positions around the world. You do not need a degree to be a virtual assistant, but knowledge of office management practices (including business communication, bookkeeping and billing) is required.
