Denture cleaner is a substance designed to break down any food debris and staining on false teeth. In the process, it also deodorizes to keep the mouth smelling and tasting fresh. Although the product is marketed in the dental category, there are many other ways to use denture cleaner around the house.

Denture cleaner has many other applications besides oral hygiene. When used with vinegar, a few tablets in the toilet bowl help it sparkle. It can also unclog drains. Simply drop about 2 tablets down the drain and dump about 1 or 2 cups of vinegar down as well. Let that sit for about 10 minutes and pour several cups of hot water to clear it all out. Another handy use for denture cleaner is removing food stains and crusty build-up on cookware. Simply fill the kitchen sink with warm water and drop 3 tablets in the water. Let the cookware soak for at least 1 hour and wipe clean.

Denture cleaner is less expensive than other types of cleaning chemicals, but it certainly isn't the cheapest way to go. A little vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide does the same work as denture cleaner for less the price. In fact, you can also use 1 tsp. of baking powder with 3 tsp. of vinegar to clean dentures.

For example, you can use it to clean your dentures and then dump it in the toilet to clean that as well. It also trumps baking soda, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide in the convenience department because it comes in easy-to-measure and easy-to-handle tablets.

Although denture cleaners can do the same cleaning job as many household chemical products, sometimes they do take a bit longer. For example, instead of scrubbing a toilet with abrasive products immediately, you might have to wait at least 10 minutes for the denture cleaner to break down the grime before you scrub.

If you run out of denture cleaner, never use very hot water or bleach to clean dentures. Bleach is harmful to the body, and hot water can weaken the denture plastic over time, according to Perma-Laboratories.com.
