Aldara Product Information
Aldara, the brand name for imiquimod, is an immune response modifier used to treat actinic keratosis, scaly growths on the skin that are caused by direct sun exposure. It stimulates the body's own immune system to destroy abnormal cells. Doctors also prescribe Aldara to treat genital warts caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).

Considerations
-
Aldara is a topical cream. If you have broken, sunburned, windburned or irritated skin, don't apply Aldara to those areas, as it can cause severe pain. If you are using Aldara to treat genital warts, new warts may appear during treatment. This is normal and should be no cause for alarm. After applying the cream, don't engage in sexual activity that could transfer it to your partner's skin.
Side Effects
-
The most common side effects that Aldara users report include red, burning and peeling skin, swelling, sores or blisters. Other side effects may include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, body ache, headache, upset stomach, diarrhea, cough, sore throat and runny nose.

Important Safety Information
-
Aldara is meant for topical use only and you should not apply it to open wounds or use it in any of the body's orifices. Aldara can increase your sensitivity to the sun, so if you must be out in the sun while being treated, always wear protective clothing or sunscreen. While Aldara is sometimes used to treat genital warts associated with HPV, a sexually transmitted disease, it does not prevent this virus from spreading as a result of sexual activity.
Use
-
Apply an even coat of Aldara to the affected area. Thoroughly wash your hands before and after applying the medication. The frequency and amount of Aldara you use will vary depending on what condition the medication is treating. Follow your doctor's instructions and don't use more of the cream than is necessary to cover the affected area.
Warning
-
If you experience any side effects, contact your physician. Aldara is meant for the treatment of the above ailments only and should never be used for any other medical conditions unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.
