Uses for Doryx

Doryx is the brand name for a prescription medicine whose generic name is doxycycline hyclate. The medication is taken orally. Doryx is used for the treatment of a wide array of bacterial infections. It is classified as being a tetracycline antibiotic, and it functions by halting the growth and spreading of bacteria. It is also an antimalarial drug.

  1. Bacterial Infections

    • Doryx is commonly used to treat a vast range of bacterial infections, such as the sexually transmitted diseases chlamydia and gonorrhea, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and periodontitis (disease of the gums).

    Rosacea

    • Another common use of Doryx is for the treatment of the skin condition known as rosacea. Rosacea is a type of chronic skin disorder that is characterized by inflammation of the cheeks, eyelids, forehead, nose, and chin. Doryx manages and treats the bumps, blemishes, and lesions (very similar to acne) that are caused by this skin condition. However, it does not treat the reddening of the face that rosacea causes.

    Use

    • This medication is taken orally and must be taken only in the prescribed amounts (do not take lower or higher dosages). It should be taken accompanied by a glass of water. It can be taken either with or without a meal or snack. However, it should not be taken with milk or any other dairy foods, as they interfere with the body's absorption of the medication.

    Side Effects

    • Some minor side effects of Doryx are mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, and vaginal discharge or itchiness, white sores or patches on the lips or inside of the mouth, difficulty swallowing, and swollen tongue. More severe side effects of Doryx include allergic reaction (swelling, having a hard time breathing, and hives), extreme upper stomach pain going all the way to the back, severe red skin rash, blistering or peeling, dizziness, body aches, chills, appetite loss, blurry vision, severe headache, bleeding or bruising easily, abnormal feelings of weakness, yellowed skin, pale skin, dark urine, confusion, disorientation, fever, and urinating with less frequency.

    Overdose

    • If you use Doryx for any medical reason and suspect that you might have taken more than your appropriate dosage amount, you need to get emergency medical help. Some symptoms of Doryx overdose include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you experience any of those signs after taking too much of the medicine, you might have overdosed.
