Grants for Laptop Computers
There is a digital divide in the United States, with millions of people lacking sufficient access to computer technology. Those who are unable to access the Internet are at a significant economic and educational disadvantage. Fortunately, grants for laptop computers are available for organizations and individuals who qualify.
-
City Youth Now
-
City Youth Now gives laptop computers to young people. To be eligible, a person must be ages 17 to 22 and be enrolled in college or a vocational school, or a child in foster care. Only certain individuals can apply for this grant on behalf of the recipient. They include social workers, attorneys, probation officers or any other adult authorized by a court.
Laptops for Education
-
Some colleges offer grants because many institutions require students to have laptops. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was one of the first universities to offer this kind of assistance. There, the Carolina Computing Initiative provides laptop grants. Students must fill out a CSS Financial Aid Profile with the university to determine if they are eligible. Students must apply before the laptop-ordering deadline, which is in April of each year.

Partners in Learning Grants
-
The Microsoft Foundation offers Partners in Learning Grants, which can pay for software, direct technical assistance and hardware, including laptop computers. Qualified non-profit 501(3)(c) organizations or educational based institutions are eligible. The foundation never gives money directly to an individual, so interested people must apply through a qualifying organization.
Computers for Kids (Idaho Only)
-
Computers for Kids receives donated computers, which it then distributes to Idaho students in need. To be eligible, a young person must be an Idaho resident enrolled in a public, private or charter school. College freshmen and sophomores can also apply.
AT&T
-
The Excelerator Competitive Technology Grant from AT&T makes it possible for non-profit organizations to integrate technology into their programs. Laptop computers have been donated by this foundation for education and scientific study. For eligibility requirements, contact AT&T through its website (see Resources).
