Sigma 10-20mm vs. Canon 10-22mm

Can't seem to choose between the Canon 10-22mm lens and the Sigma 10-20mm lens? While they are similar, there are a few differences between each lens that may make your decision easier on which lens is best for you.

  1. Focal Length

    • The Canon has a 2mm advantage over the Sigma when it comes to focal length. The Canon has a focal length of 22mm compared to the Sigma at 20mm. Both zoom lenses start at 10mm. These lenses are ideal for wide scenic shots, portraits and common shooting situations where you don't need to zoom in close to capture the subject.

    Aperture

    • The Canon has a wider aperture at 3.5 compared to the Sigma at 4.0. This allows the Canon to shoot at faster speeds, which produces better photos in low-light conditions. If you shoot primarily in low-light conditions or if you take sports photos, the Canon lens would be more adept for those shooting environments.

    Elements

    • When comparing equal length lenses, pay attention to the number of glass elements each lens contains. If one lens has significantly more elements than the other, it results in a better focusing lens that takes better overall quality pictures. The Canon has 13 glass elements; the Sigma has 14.

    Where They Are Made

    • The Canon 10-22mm is a U.S.-made lens. Canon lenses are either made in the United States or Japan. All of Sigma's lenses, including the 10-20mm, are made in Japan.

    Weight

    • The Sigma weighs 16.4 oz. compared to the Canon at 13.6 oz. This could be attributed to the extra glass element or the materials used to build each lens.
