Thoughtful Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Valentine's Day is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. Traditionally Valentine's Day is celebrated by giving a gift or doing something nice for a girl or boyfriend, or a spouse. Valentine's Day is an expression of love and is often thought of as a romantic holiday. Getting a thoughtful gift is sometimes forgotten due to the convenience of being able the grab a box of chocolates and a bouquet of flowers at the nearest grocery store. There are some simple ways to make Valentine's Day gifts thoughtful and personal.

  • Valentine's Day was officially declared to be on February 14th by Pope Gelasius in 498 A.D. There are several legends surrounding the real St. Valentine's identity. One of the most popular concerns a priest who served in Rome during the third century. At the time, marriage for young men had been outlawed by Emperor Claudius II to keep the soldiers single and ready for battle. It is said that St. Valentine would secretly marry the soldiers and their sweethearts in defiance of the Emperor's decree. Legend also states that Valentine himself may have sent the very first Valentine's greeting to a girl who frequently paid him visits after he was jailed for his crimes. The Valentine greeting remains one of the most popular Valentine's Day gifts today.

  • One of the most important aspects of a thoughtful Valentine's gift is that it is personal to the recipient. Another important consideration is who is receiving the gift. Valentine's Day is not reserved only for lovers. People give Valentine's gifts to their parents, friends, siblings and other acquaintances. School children give cards and candy to their friends and classmates. Certainly romantic gifts should be reserved for spouses and girl and boyfriends, and cards and trinkets are appropriate for anyone else.

  • Valentine's gifts can range from cards to diamond rings. Valentine's Day is a popular day for marriage proposals and in that case a diamond engagement ring would fit the occasion. However, gifts to not have to expensive to be thoughtful. A handwritten poem or love letter can be just as (if not more) meaningful as a purchased gift. Making a special dinner or taking a moonlit walk on the beach are both romantic and thoughtful gifts.

  • Some people love traditions, so don't think the old standbys can't be thoughtful. Flowers, candy and cards are popular for a reason. A lot of people like to receive them. What makes something thoughtful is that there is thought put into it. If someone looks forward to getting flowers and a heart-shaped box of chocolates on Valentine's Day, then the thoughtful thing would be to get her what she likes.

  • Some specific ideas are: prepare a favorite meal and set the table for a romantic dinner for two; write a letter telling your significant other everything you love about him; write out a book of coupons for things you will do for him--chores, dinner, etc.; buy him something he's been wanting but hasn't bought yet; or go on a surprise romantic getaway.
