Ulnar-Sided Wrist Pain

The ulnotriquetral ligament connects a person's forearm bones in the wrist. It can be torn by injury and can cause ulnar-sided wrist pain. This pain can disable people from doing everyday tasks.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of a UT split occur immediately after an injury or tear occurs. Pain can occur with simple movements of the arm or wrist. There may also be a lump caused by the break on the side of the arm. The wrist may look swollen, black and bruised.

    Diagnosis

    • The doctor may press down on the person's ulnar fovea to see if it causes pain. If the pain caused by pressure is similar to the pain when moving the wrist, the doctor may diagnose a UT tear.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for UT tear is usually surgery. The surgery involves suturing the torn ligament and immobilizing the wrist and arm until it fully heals. It must stay in one place until the person regains strength in the arm and wrist.

    Time Frame

    • The wrist must be immobilized until the arm and wrist fully heals. This means that most people will be restricted from certain activities from six weeks to a few months.

    Warning

    • If you suspect that you have a UT tear and are experiencing ulnar wrist pain, it's important to seek medical advice immediately. Early recognition can prevent further damage to the ligament.
