Label-Making Machines
Label-making machines are valuable tools to have in the workplace. Old-style label makers printed one line of raised print on a plastic strip. Today's label machines perform a variety of label-making functions on different media. Many of them have the capability of printing in more than one color. Some even allow you to add graphics.

Function
-
Label makers can be set up to create a variety of labels to use on your products and around your business. Some label machines create labels suitable for identifying wire and other three-dimensional objects as well as more traditional flat labels. Label-making machines can print mailing labels for mass mailings and for individual posts. Depending on the size of the label makers, they can help you organize your workspace and create directions, warning signs and any number of other signs that you may need to post around your place of business.

Types
-
Label-making machines come in three basic types. Desktop or tabletop models make labels in a variety of shapes and sizes often from stock labels. They may connect to a computer to allow for additional label design capabilities. Hand-held models can generate labels on the spot and are handy to take directly to the products you need to label. Specialty label-making machines can create labels on a variety of materials other than paper and can create large labels as well as signs.
Features
-
Font and type-size selection are standard features of most label-making machines. Some label machines are standalone units that create basic black and white labels. Other label-making machines connect with your computer and can create a number of labels designed with software installed on your PC. Some label makers have internal storage capabilities while other label-making machines allow you to save that information on your computer. Other special features might include the capability of making labels on transparencies or on plastic sheets and other materials.
Size
-
Hand-held label-making machines are lightweight and portable. Desktop models range from the size of a shoebox to the size of a desktop printer. Specialty label makers that are capable of making signs can be quite large. Machines in this category, such as the Brady PowerMark Label and Sign Maker, can weigh up to 45 pounds and measure 12.38 x 19.8 x 19.13 inches.
Considerations
-
When purchasing a label maker, make sure you can find the appropriate label-making supplies. Many label machines take standard-size labels that you can purchase in any office supply store. Other label makers require special tapes to create the labels. If these label supplies are not readily available or are frequently out of stock, you may not get the full value from your label-making equipment. You may find it hard to find supplies for some discounted or discontinued models.
