Live-in housekeepers provide basic household maintenance in a residential setting. Housekeepers that live within the resident most likely will have a room, bathroom and utilities and food are part of the compensation package. Housekeepers may also supervise other domestic employees.

Responsibilities include dusting, vacuuming, dish washing, mopping, sweeping, cleaning kitchen appliances like stoves or ovens or cleaning bathrooms. Duties could also include making beds and laundry.
Running errands like grocery shopping or picking up dry cleaning could also be the responsibility of a housekeeper. Live-in housekeepers may also have responsibilities that include babysitting or caring for children on a day-to-day basis when the parents are not home.

Compensation for live-in housekeepers are normally lower than the salaries of housekeepers that live outside of the residence. According to Career Builder, housekeepers living in the home with possible supervisory responsibilities average $20,420 with a median salary of between $14,191 and $24,785. Salaries can be affected by region, years of experience and age and gender of the housekeeper.

Housekeepers hold 1.5 million jobs and 29 percent are employed in a private residential setting. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth for live-in housekeepers will increase as the population ages and as families have less time to devote to housekeeping activities.

If responsibilities include duties like gardening or light repair work, the salary could be higher. Most states have laws that govern the appropriate taxing and employment status of live-in housekeepers or may have laws that govern workman's compensation.
