TV Vs. Vizio

Shopping for a new television can lead to a big decision for consumers, with such a large number of manufacturers, models, types and sizes currently available. Vizio is a relatively new company and, in the past few years, has become one of the top-selling producers of flat-panel HDTVs. When considering a new TV purchase, there are a few factors to look at when deciding between Vizio and the other brands in stores.

  1. Vizio

    • Vizio, Inc., based in Irvine, California, began manufacturing televisions in 2005 as V, Inc., seeking to become a less expensive alternative to other brands on the market. HDTVs have grown more popular each year as the technology improved to make flat-panel TVs lighter, sleeker and more affordable, allowing Vizio to gain a footing in the industry and a place in stores, leading to growing sales.

    Types of TV

    • Most TVs sold today are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or plasma, with a few models still using rear-projection digital light processing (DLP). All three of these types provide high-quality HD video among other features. Vizio concentrates most of its production on LCD (in models ranging from 19 to 55 inches) with the exception of 42- and 50-inch plasma models.

    Price, Availability

    • One of the reasons Vizio is among the highest-selling brands today is that its prices tend to be lower than those of other major brands including Sony and Samsung, as well as being featured and sold in many of the major discount electronics retailers including Wal-Mart, Sams Club, Costco and Target. Though prices will vary depending on the retailer and any temporary sales, smaller models can be found for as low as $200.

    Quality

    • Modern television sets are built to last for years under normal conditions, with the digital technology being more reliable than older analog technologies. In this respect, Vizio is no different---even with the lower prices, it is generally highly rated from a variety of electronics trade magazines, with CNet ranking a few models at the top of its "Best Cheap LCD TVs" list. Though higher-end models will obviously have more features and outperform Vizio in some areas, the difference may be negligible when price is considered.

    Other Products

    • Vizio doesn't have nearly as wide a variety of other products and related component devices as the larger television/electronics manufacturers, but, along with TVs, it also produces a Blu-Ray DVD player as well as accessories including sound-enhancement components and speakers, audio/video cables and wall-mounting kits for its televisions.
