Colonic Irrigation Equipment for Medical Procedures

Colonic irrigation equipment is primarily used by alternative-medicine practitioners (i.e., colon hydrotherapists) or naturopathic doctors. There are a number of items that comprise a colonic irrigation unit. Most equipment is fairly standard. The water filtration units are one of the biggest considerations. There are also different types of temperature controls. Each unit and the peripheral parts can cost thousands of dollars.

  1. History

    • Colonic irrigation equipment was first used by the Egyptians for medicinal purposes about 1500 B.C. There are records listed in the Ebers Papyrus, a document of medical practices during that time period. Assyrians, Babylonians and Hindus also have recorded documents of the practice. Dr. Kellogg of Battle Creek, Michigan, used the procedure for curing patients with gastrointestinal diseases. Equipment and sanitation practices have evolved over time into state-of-the art technology.

    Types of Colonic Irrigation Equipment

    • Ozonator machines can be one of the first considerations when purchasing colonic irrigation equipment for medical procedures. These units are generators which add ozone to the water. Ozone, along with hydrogen peroxide, is a deadly combination for intestinal parasites. Killing parasites is one of the key medical uses for colonic irrigation. Thus, choosing the right ozonator is extremely important.

Laboratory generators can handle a higher volume of usage and are virtually maintenance free. The PZV ozonator has a mini air compressor. Some units have an LED display.

Tubing can also be made from different metals. Temperature controls and displays can also vary. A potential purchaser can check ozone calibration charts for determining an ozonator's efficiency.

    Other Types of Equipment

    • There are different table units and basins available for commercial use. Water tanks come in a variety of sizes as the average treatment can use over 25 gallons of water. Clear tubing is normally placed along the wall along with florescent lighting for viewing contents. And since the water tanks are elevated, cabinet units can be used for both practical and aesthetic purposes. Another part is the speculum, the tubing that is inserted into the patient's rectum. These pieces can vary as water pressure can jar them loose during a patient's session.

    Benefits

    • Colonic irrigation equipment is used to treat people with autoimmune diseases, HIV and cancer. It pays to have the most updated and durable equipment as patients depend on the alternative medical practitioner's services. A water temperature control with an LED display enables a patient to work them without assistance. Correct tubing can provide more comfort and ease of use.

    Misconceptions

    • Most of those in the mainstream medical world neither advocate or believe in the benefits of colonic irrigation. They argue that a person may wash away beneficial bacteria in his colon with this method. They also warn people that the speculums could tear the lower part of the descending colon. Alternative medical practitioners rave about the benefits of this equipment and some indicate having patients who have made marked improvements with their treatments. Still, colonic irrigation has never been officially approved as a valid practice by the FDA.
