Tazorac vs. Retin-A Micro
Tazorac is the brand name for the generic drug tazarotene, a vitamin A derivative available only through prescription. Patients can get Tazorac as a cream or gel in either .05 percent or .10 percent concentration levels. Retin-A, developed over 25 years ago, is also a vitamin A derivative that is only available by prescription. Retin-A, also known by its generic name tretinoin, is available as either a gel or cream in either 0.04 percent or 0.1 percent concentration.

Both Tazorac and Retin-A are more commonly used for the treatment of acne vulgaris, but Retin-A has been on the market longer than Tazorac. These medications work by slowing the growth of shedding skin cells. For acne, these medications work by helping to keep the pores clear. However, for psoriasis, Tazorac is more often prescribed and helps to reduce inflammation and decreasing the amount of psoriasis plaques.
Tazorac and Retin-A are also effective treatments for a variety of other skin conditions including wrinkles, flat warts, oily skin, and keratosis piliaris.

Tazorac and Retin-A treat the same skin disorders and both medications work very similarly. However, Tazorac is reportedly a stronger medication than Retin-A and works faster on skin disorders, particularly acne and psoriasis.

How to Use Tazorac and Retin-A Micro

For acne, wash the face gently with a noncomedogenic facial wash, followed by a moisturizer. When the skin is completely dry, apply a pea-sized amount of the medication on the face. This should be done once a day. For psoriasis, apply a pea-sized amount of Tazorac to the affected area once a day. The affected area must be dry in order to work properly.

Typical side effects include itching, burning and peeling of the skin. Some acne patients experience an increase in acne lesions during the first two weeks of treatment, but experience improvement within 8 to 12 weeks. Patients may also become more sensitive to sunlight and should therefore take precautions when being exposed to the sun. Both Tazorac and Retin-A can cause the skin to thin, therefore patients should avoid waxing as a method for hair removal. Psoriasis patients may experience reddening in the affected area before clearing.

Tazorac and Retin-A are available through prescription only and patients should contact their dermatologist. However, there are several companies that have products containing a nonprescription-strength form called retinol, claimed to be an effective anti-aging treatment. These include products from Neutrogena, ROC, and Oil of Olay.
