Both Lorcet and Lortab are medications used to manage pain. They are different brands of a product that utilizes a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen to control pain. There are several advantages and disadvantages involved in using either Lorcet or Lortab. They are both available by prescription only.

The main ingredients in both Lorcet and Lortab are hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is an opioid analgesic, and acetaminophen is an analgesic as well as an antipyretic. Analgesics are pain relievers, and antipyretics are fever reducers. Both medications are available with varying amounts of each drug.

Lorcet and Lortab are prescription-strength anti-pain medications. They are prescribed to treat or provide relief from moderate to moderately severe pain that can be brought on by any number of causes. They can be used to treat headaches, backaches and pain associated with surgery or injury.

Characteristics

Lortab 10/500 tablets contain 10 mg of hydrocodone bitartrate and 500 mg of acetaminophen. They are pink in appearance and capsule-shaped. There are "ucb" markings on one side of the tablet and "910" markings on the other side. Lortab also comes in 2.5/500, 5/500 and 7.5/500 strengths; the first number is the amount of hydrocodone in each tablet in milligrams while the second number is the amount of acetaminophen in each tablet in milligrams.
Lorcet tablets are available in the same strengths and ratios as Lortabs with the additional offering of a 10/650 tablet with 10 mg hydrocodone, 650 mg acetaminophen. The marking on Lorcet tablets are different than the markings on Lortab tablets.
Side Effects

People may encounter certain side effects while taking these medications. Some typical side effects associated with Lortab use are: light-headedness, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. It can also cause drowsiness, anxiety, fear and impair physical and mental performance. The typical side effects associated with Lorcet are nearly the same as what can be expected from Lortab use. People with allergies to either hydrocodone or acetaminophen should never take Lorcet or Lortab to manage pain.

Both Lorcets and Lortabs are in a classification of drugs called narcotics that may be habit-forming. Hydrocodone overdoses can result in respiratory depression and irregular breathing. Newborns will have a physical dependence on opioids if they were born to a mother who took opioids regularly while pregnant. Narcotics like Lorcet and Lortab should only be taken under the supervision of a doctor.
