Mobile Phone Engineering & Technology

The invention of mobile phones has allowed people all over the planet to connect with each other and talk in ways never before imaginable. The way cellular devices communicate is essentially the transmission, coding and decoding of radio signals. However, the internal technologies of cellular phones is much more complex, allowing the use of countless other features and abilities that phones now contain.

  1. The Basics

    • The internal engineering of cell phones takes many different forms. Everything from the use of different forms of batteries, the use of data and data transfer via cords and cards, and the cell phone operating systems themselves. Much of a cell phone these days does not deal with the actual radio transmissions, but everything else. Modern mobile phones are capable of more than ever before.

    Data and Transfer

    • Cell phones are capable of storing large amounts of data in various forms, from contact lists and task lists to photos and video. Different phones are capable of vast amounts of data, and some phones designed for multimedia can hold much more, such as Apple Inc.'s iPhone, which is currently capable of holding up to 32 gigabytes of data. Certain data like contacts and other personal information can also be stored and transferred via SIM cards, enabling users to transfer all necessary data from one phone to another just by switching the cards between phones.

    Operating Systems

    • Many phones use basic operating systems that allow users to accomplish their tasks, but many higher-end and more advanced phones have more elaborate operating systems. Some phones use an adaptation of Windows by Microsoft, the iPhone uses a modified version of Mac OS, and Google has created a phone OS called Android. These custom operating systems allow many more features, such as Internet browsing, photo sharing, games, taking videos.

    Battery and Power

    • Cell phones use one of three major types of batteries: nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion. The battery a phone comes with depends heavily on price and how it matches with the phone. Lithium ion batteries are becoming increasingly common in cell phones because they are small and last the longest out of all three kinds. These batteries are the most expensive, but because of their reliability and size, that is often overlooked.

    Considerations

    • Technology is swiftly becoming smaller and faster every day, but sometimes it takes a while for the price to lower when it catches on. Mobile phones are incredibly versatile and can perform many different tasks, but they are still delicate and can be very expensive to repair or replace. Batteries, especially lithium ion, can be incredibly expensive if damaged. However, when replacing a phone, many companies offer special deals and discounts when recycling old batteries.
