The Effects of Clavamox

Clavamox is a medication that is used for dogs and cats. It is an antibiotic and treats various pet medical conditions, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other bacterial infections (like those of the mouth, ear, respiratory tract and skin). The active ingredients of Clavamox are potassium clavulamate and amoxicillin. The medicine comes in two different forms: oral suspension and tablets. There are various effects of Clavamox.

  1. Function

    • With Clavamox, amoxicillin and potassium clavulamate both work in order to remove bacteria that causes infection. Amoxicillin operates by restraining the synthesis of cell walls, and simultaneously the potassium clavulanate holds back the bacteria from making the enzyme known as beta-lactamase. This otherwise would cause the amoxicillin to become inactive. Combining the potassium clavulanate to the amoxicillin enables the antibiotic to work in a much broader manner.

    Soft Tissue and Skin Infections

    • One beneficial effect of administering Clavamox to dogs and cats is that it is suitable for treating soft-tissue and skin infections, like abscesses, wounds and cellulitis (a severe connective tissue inflammation resulting from bacteria).

    Pyoderma

    • Clavamox is effective in treating pyodermas that are persistent. Pyoderma refers to bacterial skin infections that cause the formulation of pus (within lesions). It is one of the most common inflammatory conditions in pets. Clavamox also is effective at treating skin infections that pets might be experiencing for the first time.

    Overdose

    • If you suspect that your pet might have overdosed on Clavamox, immediately contact the veterinarian or seek emergency treatment. Some symptoms of Clavamox overdose include nausea, throwing up, kidney problems, hyperactivity, skin rash and drowsiness.

    Other Drugs

    • It is important to be aware of any other drugs that might have effects on Clavamox. If your pet is taking any other antibiotic, the veterinarian must be made aware of that fact before Clavamox treatment begins. This applies also to probenecid and allopurinol. This might result in the pet having to take another type of medication or needing a dosage change.
