Moxifloxacin Treatment

Moxifloxacin is the generic name of a prescription medicine. Avelox is a common brand name of this medicine. It is classified as an antibiotic and is part of the group known as fluoroquinolones. It is used for the treatment of various kinds of bacterial infections. It treats bronchitis, pneumonia, and skin, sinus and abdominal infections (all of which result from bacteria).

  1. Primary Use

    • Moxifloxacin is used to halt the growth and spreading of bacteria that occurs as a result of bacterial infections. It does this by killing all of the bacteria responsible for the infection. As an antibiotic, it is only used for the treatment of bacterial infections and cannot be used to treat viral ones, such as influenza and the cold.

    Usage

    • Moxifloxacin comes in tablet form and is administered orally. The medication is intended to be used for a duration of between five and 21 days in most cases, depending on the kind of infection the individual is treating. Moxifloxacin can be taken with or without food. The medicine should be taken at approximately the same time on a daily basis. Only the recommended dosage amount should be taken.

    Other Medical Conditions

    • Apart from bacterial infections, moxifloxacin is also used as a treatment option for various other medical conditions, such as endocarditis, an infection that involves the heart's valves and lining, and tuberculosis. It can also prevent, manage and treat anthrax, which is a severe infection. Anthrax can occur in individuals that have been exposed to its germs in the air. Moxifloxacin often treats anthrax when other medicines are not available for use.

    Minor Side Effects

    • Treatment with moxifloxacin can produce some generally minor side effects. These side effects include sores on the tongue or inside of the mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomachache, dry mouth, white patches within the mouth, gas, constipation, vaginal burning or itching, heartburn, taste changes, appetite loss, weakness, headache, and sweating. If these side effects persist or get worse over time, seek medical help.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects of moxifloxacin treatment are uncommon. However, should they occur, it is crucial to seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible. These serious effects are having a hard time swallowing or breathing, extreme diarrhea (bloody or watery stools), loss of consciousness, the throat or the face becoming swollen, hives, skin rash, itching, confusion, disorientation, shortness of breath, paleness, suicidal feelings, agitation, nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, darker colored urine, extreme exhaustion, peeling or blistered skin, fever, joint or muscle ache, depression, being suspicious and not trusting others, abnormal bleeding or bruising, pounding, irregular, or rapid heartbeat, hallucinations, nightmares, convulsions, passing out, dizziness, weakness, numbness, pain, tingling or burning of the legs, feet, arms, or hands, having a hard time falling and remaining asleep, and yellowing of the eyes or the skin.
