What Are Body Oils
-
Body oils or essential body oils are extracted from flowers, seeds, fruits, leaves, bark, roots and resins. Ideally, the best body oils are created without the use of chemicals and are entirely organic.
The body oil is distilled, usually by steam or water. With the exception orange, lemongrass and patchouli oils, which are yellow, all oils are clear. Body oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. They are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.
Body oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Perfumes and fragrance oils are artificially created, while true body oils are organically derived from real plants. Also, perfumes and fragrance oils do not have the same therapeutic benefits as body oils.
Types of Body OIl
-
There are three types of essential oils.
The first type is a concrete body oil. This type of body oil is the solid waxy residue usually derived from flower petals. Jasmine and neroli are examples of body oils that can be found in this form.
The second type is expressed body oil. Expressed body oils are pressed from the rind of citrus fruits. Orange, grapefruit, lemon and tangerine oils are created this way, and are best known for their therapeutic benefits. It is essential that these oils are derived from organically grown fruits to avoid any toxins that might come from pesticides and other chemicals.
The third type is steam-distilled body oils. This the most common type of body oil. The plant form which the body oil is being derived is placed inside a cooking chamber and steam is passed through it. The steam is then collected and condensed and is processed through a separator to create the body oil.
