What Is a Swing Coat?

At its debut in the late '40s the swing coat was long and swept to the knees. Today's version of the coat falls above or at the waistline and comes in a variety of colors and fabrics with varying collars, buttons, sleeves and trims. Flattering for all figures, the swing coat is a basic staple that every woman should have in her wardrobe.

  1. Form

    • Made out of lightweight material, the coat is perfect for spring or fall wear. Fitted through the shoulders, upper arms and chest the body of the coat gradually moves outward forming a wide cape-like shape. The extra volume is what makes the coat "swing."

    Function

    • Initially designed to cover the full skirts women wore in the '40s, the swing coat quickly became synonymous with post-war baby boomers who used the jacket to help cover up their pregnant bellies. Today's swing coats are cropped short allowing for versatility in wear.

    History

    • The years leading up to and during World War II were a time of conservation and constraint. Everything from metal to plastic and even fabric was rationed by the government in order to ensure an ample, ready supply for the war effort. Clothing during this time was plain, simple and conservative. After the war ended women were ready to break free from the confined and restricted look. In 1947 Christian Dior introduced the full calf-length skirt along with a tailored jacket that flared at the waist. Made from rich, luxurious fabrics the skirt was exactly what women were longing for--voluminous pieces made from lavish materials. Introduced a few years later by designers such as Jacques Fath and Christian Dior, the swing coat instantly became as popular as the full skirts it was designed to cover.

    Fit Positives

    • - Compliments all figures
      - Volume minimizes the look/size of upper body
      - Draws attention away from the chest
      - When paired with fitted skirt or pants, elongates and narrows body

    Fit Negatives

    • - Volume could overwhelm small body frames
      - If paired incorrectly with a full skirt the excess of material results in a shapeless look
      - Since the coat is meant to be oversized, loud, bright colors and patterns can be too busy and distracting
