What Are the Chemicals Used in Cosmetology?
The beauty industry relies heavily on the use of chemicals in the production of cosmetics and cosmetic processes such as hair dying and nail technology. Cosmetologists are trained in the use of chemicals to sanitize their tools and work areas and are taught the proper safety precautions in the use of these chemicals. Does this Spark an idea?

Preservatives
-
Most cosmetics that don't claim to be all-natural or organic contain man-made chemicals to preserve the product. Propylparaben belongs to the paraben family of preservatives and is a synthetic compound. Studies have been run on the parabens, and the results show that exposure to these preservatives over a long period of time can have harmful effects, such as the growth of cancerous cells and allergic reactions in some people. Cosmetics only have very small amounts of preservatives.
Emulsifiers
-
Emulsifiers and solubilizers are chemicals that make it possible for oil-based substances and water-based ingredients to mix together without separating. The ingredients are essential in the making of lotions, conditioners, shampoos and sunscreens. Polysorbate 80 is a common emulsifier and so is sorbitan oleate, both of which are water soluble and derived from plants.

Santizers
-
Proper sanitation is important in the beauty industry, and strict regulations are put in place so that all tools and items that can be used from person to person are completely sterile and won't spread bacteria. Combs, scissors, and nonporous surfaces are cleaned thoroughly with bleach water, and the amount of bleach depends on what exactly they are cleaning up. If bodily fluids are involved, the amount of bleach in the ratio is very high. Ispropyl and ethyl alcohol are also used to clean instruments such as hair clips.
Risks
-
Many of the stronger chemicals used in nail salons have fumes that may irritate anyone who is exposed to them for an extended period of time. Some of the chemicals used in the making of nail polish have been banned by certain companies after being linked to causing asthma-like symptoms, dizziness and headaches. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has even cautioned about some of the chemicals such as acetone and ethyl methacrylate.
Precautions
-
When you are working with any kind of chemical or a product that is known to contain chemicals you should take the necessary precautions. Keep any cosmetics out of your eyes. When spraying hairspray or any other product on your hair, spray away from your face or use a piece of paper or other object as a shield. Wear a face mask to protect yourself from breathing in any chemicals with strong fumes.
