Side Effects of Dothiepin

Dothiepin, sold under the brand-names Dosulepin and Prothiaden, is a prescription drug that is used to treat those who suffer from depression. As is common with many prescription drugs, Dothiepin can cause multiple mild to severe side effects.

  1. Identification

    • Dothiepin belongs to the group of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants. The drug is able to treat depression by blocking the reabsorption of the chemicals serotonin and nonadrenaline in the brain. By doing so, dothiepin is able to elevate mood and maintain a more regular mental state for the individual.

    Less Serious Side Effects

    • Side effects that may occur as a result of using dothiepin that are less severe include general tiredness, dry mouth, drowsiness and dizziness, constipation and dry eyes. Though less serious than other side effects, always consult your doctor if any become more bothersome or regularly occur.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Although occurring in rare cases, the following side effects have been reported: severe rash, vision changes, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, irregular heartbeat and sore throat. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these side effects occur.

    Usage and Storage

    • Always follow the prescription provided to you by your doctor. Never deviate from the prescribed dosage or duration of use. Since dothiepin is available in tablet and liquid form, be sure that you understand the correct procedure for use or your particular medication. Doses of dothiepin are generally taken before bedtime. Store in a cool place away from both heat and moisture.

    Warning

    • Children who use dothiepin may be more susceptible to suicidal thoughts. Always consult a full list of possible drug interactions before regularly using dothiepin. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you are sure that the side effects of dizziness and drowsiness do not occur. Discuss the dangers of using dothiepin when pregnant with your doctor.
