Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can be naturally found in the energy "power house" known as the mitochondria. The mitochondria are located in every cell in the human body. CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant. This compound is also involved in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the cell's primary source of energy and facilitates biological processes including muscle contraction and the production of protein.

    Potential

  1. CoQ10 can increase energy output, enhance your immune system, and act as a powerful antioxidant. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research suggests that supplementing with CoQ10 by itself or in combination with other drug therapies could help prevent or treat various diseases: heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure/cholesterol, breast cancer, and gum disease.
  2. Types

  3. Various coenzyme Q10 supplements are available. Coenzyme Q10 in soft gels, gelatin capsules or liquid can be found any many health food or nutrition stores. CoQ10 can be obtained through your diet, too. Primary sources include oily fish (salmon and tuna), organ meats, and whole grains.
  4. Expert Insight

  5. Coenzyme Q10 plays a vital role in cellular energy in cells with high energy requirements like the cardiac cells found in the heart. These cells are very sensitive to CoQ10 deficiency that occurs during cardiac diseases. It is known that individuals suffering from congestive heart failure have impaired cardiac energy production and increased oxidative stress. It is suggested that CoQ10 may improve the prognosis in individuals that suffer from various heart diseases. Animal studies and limited human trials show that dietary CoQ10 in heart failure can restore depleted levels and could result in improvement.
  6. Theories/Speculation

  7. CoQ10 is a vital nutrient in the process of energy production and reduces oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals. It is speculated that supplementation with coenzyme Q10 can restore depleted levels in cardiac disease patients.
  8. Warning

  9. You should seek the advice of your health care provider before supplementing with coenzyme Q10. Those with underlying conditions should consult with their doctor. Coenzyme Q10 should not be used to treat any illness or condition unless recommended by your physician.
