Zyban Weight Loss

Smokers attempting to kick the habit need all the help they can get. Modern medicine has provided assistance with Zyban, a pill that helps smokers free themselves from nicotine once and for all. Many smokers have stayed away from Zyban due to its many potential side effects, including weight loss. But will Zyban truly shed pounds along with the need for cigarettes?

  1. Facts

    • Zyban is a prescription antidepressant. It has proven effective in helping people quit smoking because it eliminates cravings and lessens withdrawal symptoms. The active ingredient in Zyban is bupropion, which has been known to cause weight loss when given for depression.

    Considerations

    • A small number of Zyban users have reported weight loss when trying to quit smoking. This is due to a general loss of appetite. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can help maintain normal caloric intake and sustain weight. If the weight loss becomes problematic, consult your health care provider.

Constipation is another possible Zyban side effect. The subsequent bloating and cramping brought on by the constipation can also weaken appetite, potentially leading to weight loss. Dietary changes are the best way to treat any issues with constipation. Eating more fiber, drinking plenty of fluids, and getting regular exercise will help alleviate the condition.

Nausea is a common complaint when users first start taking Zyban. Although the problem typically goes away after a few days, the brief bouts of nausea could prompt initial weight loss.

    Theories/Speculation

    • Despite bupropion's history of causing weight loss in depression patients, Zyban doesn't always create the same side effect in smokers. People who quit smoking tend to replace cigarettes with food, and they often gain weight. Such behavior tends to counter any potential weight loss from Zyban. For this reason, studies have indicated people taking Zyban to quit smoking rarely lose or gain weight.

    Time Frame

    • Zyban may take up to four weeks to show results. Smokers should pick a quit date during the second week of taking Zyban. Monitor any changes in appetite or caloric intake over the first few weeks to help prevent unwanted weight loss.

    Warnings

    • Aside from the slim risk of weight loss, Zyban's other side effects include dry mouth, insomnia, headaches, nausea, constipation, agitation, anxiety, skin rash, and tremors. A very small percentage of people will also have an increased risk of seizure. Never use Zyban if a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) drug has been taken in the previous two weeks.
