Meanings of Fonts

Knowing the meanings of different font types will help you to choose the appropriate font for your document. Fonts are placed into categories that help to distinguish the possible uses for each type of font. Individual fonts have the ability to convey a wide variety of meanings based on the way they are used in the typed materials. Selecting a font which helps to express the meaning of the document will allow you to have a greater impact on the reader.

  1. Types

    • The vast majority of fonts are classified into types that separate distinguishing characteristics of a group of fonts. Most common font types are serif, sans serif and script fonts. Other types of fonts are characterized as dingbats or graphic fonts.

    Features

    • The features of serif fonts are the end caps, or serifs, that are located at the end points of each character. Sans serif fonts lack the end caps of serif fonts and have clearly distinguished end points. Dingbats are fonts which are composed of graphic elements in place of characters, where graphical fonts incorporate the use of patterns or designs to make up character sets.

    Identification

    • You can easily identify the font you want to use by using a font management program to separate fonts by their meaning. Fonts that are commonly used for holidays or other special events can be separated from fonts which may only be used for general correspondence. The use of font management software helps you to quickly retrieve the font you are looking for in order to achieve the desired meaning in your finished piece.

    Considerations

    • In order to achieve the desired meaning of the font you choose for your printed projects consider balancing script or decorative fonts with serif or sans serif type. By combining different font types, the printed piece will be more clearly legible and deliver a greater impact to the reader.

    Benefits

    • The key benefits to having a wide variety of fonts to choose from is the range of meaning you can deliver through the use of each one. The font you choose for invitations or greeting cards can greatly affect the meaning of the card from fun and whimsical to formal and elegant. Choosing a font which corresponds with the event you are creating the project for helps to personalize projects and give them more meaning than those created with more standard font types.
