Retinoic acid is a topical skin medication used to keep pores clear and prevent the formation of acne. The medication is also used to treat fine skin wrinkles, dark spots, and rough skin on the face caused by sun damage. As with most topical medications, a number of side effects are associated with this medication.

Common Side Effects

As mentioned, certain side effects are associated with using this medication. Some of these side effects include burning and stinging of the skin, lightening of the skin in the treated area, peeling, redness, an unusually warm feeling and unusual dryness. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with using retinoic acid, they only affect a small number of users.
Severe Side Effects

Unfortunately, there are also a number of severe side effects associated with using retinoic acid. Some of these side effects include darkening of the treated area, allergic reaction, skin rash, difficulty breathing, tightening of the chest, hives, and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips. These side effects are also very rare and do not affect a large amount of users.

Retinoic acid has not been tested in pregnant women and it is strongly recommended not to use this medication while pregnant or breast feeding. This medication should never be applied to open wounds, sunburned, or windburned skin as it can cause severe allergic reactions in some users. Some patients experience severe skin irritation during the first few weeks of using the drug, however it is important to continue using the medication as recommended by your doctor even if these symptoms persist.

Always use this medication exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in dosages that exceed what has been recommended on the label. Retinoic acid is a topical cream that should be applied evenly to the affected area and thoroughly rubbed into the skin until it is no longer visible. It should be applied once per day to problem spots on the face at bedtime. Dosages of this medication will differ depending on the patient, so consult your doctor for the best treatment method.
