DuoNeb Nebulizer Treatment
DuoNeb is the only FDA approved treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that includes two ingredients and comes in single-use, premixed vials for nebulization. DuoNeb contains the bronchodilators albuterol and ipratropium. These two medications are two of the most frequently prescribed inhaled bronchodilators for COPD. They work together synergistically to allow for maximum results with distinct benefits over hand-held metered-dose inhalers.

Benefits
-
The combining of the two medicines in DuoNeb is more efficient, and the benefits last longer than either medicine alone. DuoNeb is available in a single easy-to-use vial. This allows for no mixing and allowing for less risk of improper dosages and contamination. With DuoNeb, you receive the same amount of medicine with nearly 50 percent less solution. DuoNeb unit doses contain 3.0cc of liquid, versus 2.5cc of ipratropium unit dose and 3.0cc of albuterol for a total of 5.5cc. This allows for less time and effort while taking the treatment.
Nebulizer Significance
-
Nebulizers turn your medicine into a very fine mist. The medication is easily absorbed into your lungs while you breathe normally. With hand-held metered-dose inhalers, you need to be very coordinated and be able to hold your breath. Some MDI medications require that you activate it with your inhalation. This is problematic if you breathe in too soon or too late. Even though MDIs are convenient, they require training to ensure proper use. It has been shown that up to 70 percent of individuals do not use them properly.

Dosage and Administration
-
The recommended dose of DuoNeb is one 3 cc vial administered 4 times per day via nebulizer. The use of DuoNeb may be continued as medically indicated by your physician. DuoNeb is administered via a jet nebulizer connected to an air compressor.
To use the solution with a nebulizer, place the premeasured liquid into the medication chamber of the nebulizer. Attach a mouthpiece or mask to the drug chamber and attach the chamber to the compressor via the provided tubing. Sit upright and breathe in slowly and evenly. The treatment is completed when there is no more mist formed by and the chamber is empty. This usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Cardiovascular Effects
-
DuoNeb can produce cardiovascular effects in some patients. This is measured by an increase in pulse rate and blood pressure. Such effects are uncommon for DuoNeb at recommended doses. However, DuoNeb should be used with caution in patients with known cardiovascular disorders like elevated blood pressure or irregular heart beats.
Precaution
-
Do Not Exceed Recommended Dose. Fatalities, though rare, have been reported in association with the excessive use of inhaled products like DuoNeb.
