Salary Range for a PMP

According to the Project Management Institute, PMPs, or Project Management Professionals, have extensive knowledge and certification that demonstrates their ability to lead projects. For this reason, they are employed in numerous companies with different job functions. The salary range for PMPs is based on their experience, job function, and company for which they work.

Experience

As in most professions, people with the most experience earn the highest salaries. According to Payscale.com, in 2009, individuals with 20 years or more of experience earned a median salary of $107,966. The next highest median for salary went to those with 10 to 19 years. They earned $98,347. Those with 5 to 9 years and 1 to 4 years of experience earned a median salary of $82,356 and $66,512 respectively. Those with less than one year of experience are the lowest paid, with a salary of $57,560.

Job

There are several different jobs that PMPs do and they have different salaries. According to PayScale.com, in 2009, Information Technology Project Managers earned $88,428, Construction Project Managers earned $82,526, and Software Developer Project Managers earned $90,139 annually. Information Technology Managers had a median salary of $97,672 in 2009 and that of the Senior Business Analysts was $85,006. The two highest paying jobs for PMPs were the Vice President of Operations, with a salary of $126,509, and Director of Information Technology at $119,792 annually.

Employer Type

In 2009, employer type varies amongst PMPs as well. According to PayScale.com, companies have a median salary of $94,253 for PMPs. Private practices or firms pay their PMPs a median salary of $97,760. Non-profit organizations and hospitals have similar median salaries, with PMPs earning $86,473 and $85,856 respectively. PMPs working contract jobs earn $95,352. PMPs working for colleges and universities earn $74,308. Self-employed PMPs have a median annual income of $98,551. Schools and school districts pay their PMPs a median salary of $70,925. Franchise PMPs earn $65,066 annually. PMPs working for foundations or trusts earn a median salary of $90,783 and they earn $98,452 working for teams. The median salary of PMPs is quite different between the state and local governments and the federal government. Those working for the state and local governments earn $78,822, while those working for the federal government earn $97,089. Other types of organizations pay PMPs a salary of $86,910.

Company Sales

According to PayScale.com, in 2009 PMPs working for companies that grossed less than $500,000 in sales earned a salary of $86,166. Those working for companies that grossed $501,000 to $1,999,000 in sales earned a salary of $90,041, which was the lowest median salary for all the companies. $102,158 was the median salary for PMPs at companies grossing $10 million to $99 million. The highest paid salaries went to PMPs working for companies with $100 to $499 million in sales. These PMPs had a median salary of $124,765. In 2009, PMPs working for companies who had $1000 million to $1999 million or $2 billion plus in sales earned $106,000 and $116,000 respectively. PayScale.com hid the salaries for companies with sales between $500 and $999 million.

Company Size

In 2009, larger companies paid their PMPs more than the smaller companies did according to PayScale.com. PMPs working for companies with 1 to 9 employees and 10 to 49 employees earned a median salary of $81,509 and $82,021 respectively. $90,036 was the median salary of PMPs working for companies with 50 to 199 employees. PMPs working for companies with 200 to 599 employees, 600 to 1,999 employees, and 2,000 to 4,999 employees had similar earnings. Their median salaries were $94,110 $94,260, and $94,156 respectively. PMPs working for companies with 5,000 to 19,999 employees earned $96,921 and those with companies with 20,000 to 49,999 employees earned $100,602. The largest companies, with 50,000 or more employees earned $97,251 yearly.
