Regular internal cleansing is essential in the modern world with pollution on the rise, toxins in commercial foods and increasing amounts of stress. Many people are beginning to recognize the benefits of fasting and cleansing. There are a few vitamins which also aid in detoxification and protect the body from free radical damage.

  1. Types of Vitamins

    • Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is the number one supplement to include in any cleanse. It is an antioxidant, and protects cells against free radical damage. It strengthens the immune system and assists in the metabolism of proteins. It is found in many fresh juices that can be used to cleanse the body, including orange, grapefruit and lemon. Excessive amounts may cause loose stools.

Vitamin B6 assists in the metabolism of carbohydrates and proteins. It also helps to promote a healthy immune system and nervous system. It is also used in the treatment of several common diseases, including: asthma, PMS and arthritis. As part of a cleansing program, it should be taken along with other B vitamins, or as part of a B complex supplement.

Vitamin B12 is used by the body in the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. It promotes cell growth and development. It is highly recommended for substance abusers and those suffering with chronic illness. As a part of a cleanse, it may be taken in liquid form. It also encourages loose stools, so use with caution as high quantities may cause diarrhea.

Vitamin E, or tocopherol, protects the body from the harmful effects of oxidation. It helps to support the immune system. It occurs naturally in nuts, seeds, avocados and vegetable oils. It is a healthy addition to any cleanse, as detox programs are generally fat-free. The recommended daily dose is 8 to 10 mg or 12 to 15 IU (International Units), according to the Vitamin and Nutrition Center's vitamin guide.

    Other Supplements

    • Acidophilus is a healthy bacteria that lives in the intestinal tract. It is found in kefir and yogurt. It helps to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the body and can help the body recover from antibiotics. According to the Vitamin and Nutrition Center vitamin guide, it may also help protect against colon cancer. As part of a cleanse it can restore healthy flora to the intestines and promote digestion. It also helps support the immune system and may even reduce diarrhea that can occur during a cleanse.

    Time Frame

    • These supplements may be taken throughout the duration of a cleanse. They may also be taken long-term as part of a regular vitamin/supplement regimen. The water soluble vitamins B6, B12 and C should be taken once to three times per day with a full glass of water. As a fat soluble vitamin, vitamin E should be taken with meals containing fat, to enhance absorption. During a cleanse it is appropriate to take it with pureed avocado, which contains natural oils.

    Misconceptions

    • There is a misconception that vitamins and similar supplements are unnecessary. Unfortunately, the commercially grown foods most of us consume are grown in overworked soil with depleted nutrients. According to a recent report in Natural News, soil depletion may lead to increased levels of acrylamide, a known carcinogen. Even those with the best diets could benefit from nutritional supplements.

    Precautions

    • The above supplements should not be taken in large quantities. Excessive amounts of vitamin C will cause diarrhea. Also, taking extremely high amounts of vitamin E can be fatal. B vitamins should always be taken together, as they work synergistically, and excessive amounts of one may cause deficiencies of others. Also consult your healthcare practitioner before taking supplements if you are currently taking any prescriptions, as certain supplements may interfere with prescription drugs.
