Job Salaries for the Applied Human Sciences

Human science is the study of the social interactions, patterns, psychology and behavior of humans. A degree in the applied human science field will consist of studies in how these mannerisms of humans are applied to daily living. The range of studies in applied human science makes it a broad and lucrative field to pursue. College graduates with a degree from an applied human science program can earn anywhere from $40,000 to upwards of $100,000 a year.

  1. Degree Requirements

    • Applied human science as a degree field encompasses several concentrations. Colorado State University's College of Applied Human Science, for example, is divided into nine majors: construction management; design and merchandising; food science and human nutrition; health and exercise science; human development and family studies; occupational therapy; social work; family and consumer sciences/family and consumer science education; and education. Further, these majors are divided in concentrations and minor focuses. Each of these major studies has its own curriculum. So the degree requirements for an applied human science major are diverse.

    • Students are eligible for a wide variety of career fields after graduation. Each of the nine majors represented at Colorado State University prepares students for a career in at least 10 different professions. That means that the applied human science field is comprised of more than 100 different jobs and careers. A few examples of positions within applied human science are land developers, fashion designers, dietetics, sports medicine specialists, health-care workers, teachers and social services workers.

    • The salary of professions within the applied human science field will likely vary depending on location, experience and the need for employees. The lower-paid positions within the applied human science field will likely fall in the education and social services sectors. Job offers in these sectors average about $40,000 to $46,000 a year. Teachers earn about $43,580 to $48,690 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    • The salary of a student with a degree in an applied human science field will likely be slightly higher than $46,000 a year. Job offers in human development, health care, construction and merchandising average above $50,000 a year. For instance, advertised job offers for nurse practitioners average around $60,000 a year. Job offers for quality controllers for an operations and management company average $70,000 a year.

    Higher Salaries

    • The highest paid professions with the applied human services field will likely earn at least $80,000 a year. These professions could include jobs within health care, occupational therapy and business management. For example, developers earn an annual salary of $80,000. Physicians earn an average annual salary of $132,000 or more, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
